Elena Barrera-Waters is recognized as an emerging young leader in the field of diversity and inclusion. Most recently, she was an intern hired by the award-winning Diversity and Inclusion team at Indeed, the world’s most-used job search engine, where she evaluated D&I best practices across the high tech industry, and contributed to the development and implementation of Indeed's global D&I initiatives, training, and events. During her high school years, Elena interned at two pioneering women’s health technology companies, Conceivable (infertility solutions) and Viv Wellness (menstrual health), where she spearheaded social media marketing and student awareness initiatives. She was also a significant contributor to Smart Girls Group - a national media network focused on empowering young women, and Latinitas - an Austin-based non-profit dedicated to empowering Latina youth using media and technology. In 2015, Elena was recognized for her efforts toward women’s empowerment as one of Mogul Media's “Top 30 High School Moguls in the US You Need to Know About”. Currently a sophomore at University of Chicago, she is pursuing a degree in Comparative Human Development, an interdisciplinary department at the critical edge of thought and research in the social sciences. In addition to her educational pursuits, she works in the Provost's office as a student intern focused on diversity and inclusion initiatives, along with playing active roles in campus organizations including Resources for Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP), Kappa Alpha Theta, and UChicago’s Emerging Minds Project.
